News > January sales 'were discount-driven'

An improvement in January sales performance this year was partly driven by discounts, according to the British Retail Consortium.
Shoppers seeking post-Christmas hot deals on large electrical items, flooring and furniture were not disappointed, as "heavy discounting" took place across these retail sectors last month.
Meanwhile, clothing sales fell for the fourth month in a row, although overall retail sales in the UK increased 2.6 per cent when compared with January 2007.
Stephen Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium, said that last month's figures indicate "significantly better" sales results than in previous months and that retailers are now looking to the months ahead.
"Many retailers will be glad the boost from Valentine's Day is followed rapidly this year by Mothering Sunday and an early Easter," he said.
Thomson Financial reported that the majority of January's sales took place at the beginning of the month when the best bargains were to be had, but added that buying appeared to taper off by the end of the month.
