Dell has announced that by 2010 all of its laptops will use the more energyhyphenefficient LED backlighting technology.
The company will start shipping the first computers to adopt the new screen lighting in December as part of its E-family range and claims that the new technology will ensure users make "significant energy savings compared to cold cathode fluorescent lamp technology" when compared with most modern laptops.
Senior vice-president of Dell Product Group Jeff Clarke said: "Our customers have made it clear that they want the greenest technology possible."
The first laptops to be upgraded with the new mercury-free backlighting will be the E4200, E4300, E6400, E6400 ATG and E6500.
Dell plans to add the feature to its Precision M2400 and M4400 mobile workstations as well.
In related news, the company has lifted the covers on its Mini 9 notebook, which sports an 8.9-inch screen, 512MB of RAM and a 4GB solid state drive.
The device will be pre-installed with a modified version of the Ubuntu operating system.
